Etsy fees explained (2026): the complete seller's breakdown

Updated May 2026 ยท 8 min read ยท By RealFeeCalc Editorial Team
Fact-checked: May 30, 2026. All fees verified against Etsy's official Seller Handbook and 2026 Fee Schedule public pages.
Quick summary: An Etsy sale typically loses ~12-14% to platform fees when you stack listing ($0.20), transaction (6.5%), payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the US), and regulatory operating fee (0.35% in 2026 in some regions). If Offsite Ads triggers a sale, you also pay 12% (or 15% if you are not a Star Seller). This article breaks down each fee with real examples on $25, $50, and $100 sales so you can price correctly.

The five fees Etsy charges sellers

Etsy is not a single fee โ€” it is a stack. Most sellers underestimate their real cut because they only think of the headline 6.5% transaction fee. The actual stack in 2026:

FeeAmountWhen charged
Listing fee$0.20Per item listed; renews every 4 months OR when item sells
Transaction fee6.5% of total (item + shipping + gift wrap)Per sale
Payment processing3% + $0.25 (US)Per sale, varies by country
Regulatory operating fee0.25%โ€“1.1%Per sale in UK, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, India (2026)
Offsite Ads fee12% (Star Seller) or 15%Only if sale comes from an Etsy-paid ad

1. Listing fee โ€” $0.20

You pay $0.20 to publish a listing. It stays live for 4 months (or until the item sells). If you make a sale and want to re-list the same item, that is another $0.20 โ€” but it auto-renews by default. The listing fee is essentially a "shelf rental" โ€” small, but if you list 100 SKUs you pay $20/month just to be visible, before a single sale.

2. Transaction fee โ€” 6.5%

Charged on the full sale: item price + shipping + any gift wrap charge. So if you sell a $40 item with $5 shipping = $45 total, transaction fee = $45 ร— 6.5% = $2.93. A common mistake: people think shipping is "pass-through" โ€” it is not. Etsy taxes it.

3. Payment processing โ€” 3% + $0.25 in the US

This is Etsy Payments handling the card transaction. Comparable to Stripe or PayPal Standard but with a fixed Etsy-imposed rate. Rates vary slightly by country:

4. Regulatory operating fee โ€” new in 2026

To cover compliance costs in specific markets, Etsy added a Regulatory Operating Fee:

This is a per-sale percentage, separate from VAT or sales tax which you collect on behalf of the buyer.

5. Offsite Ads โ€” 12% or 15%

The most punishing fee. If a buyer clicks an Etsy-paid ad on Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc., and buys from you within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the entire order (or 12% if you are a Star Seller with annual sales above $10,000). You cannot opt out if you make over $10K/year. Many sellers find that Offsite Ads sales are roughly break-even โ€” they would have happened organically anyway.

Real examples: what you keep on each sale

  • Payment processing: -$1.00 (3% + $0.25)
  • Listing fee (amortized 1 sale per listing): -$0.20

  • Transaction fee: -$3.77 (6.5% on total)
  • Payment processing: -$2.00 (3% + $0.25 on the $58)

How to lower your effective Etsy fee

Become a Star Seller

Star Sellers pay 12% Offsite Ads instead of 15% โ€” 3 percentage points back. Requirements: 95%+ five-star reviews over 3 months, on-time shipping, fast responses. Most active sellers hit it within 6 months.

Bundle items to reduce listing fee impact

The $0.20 listing fee is fixed. If you sell a single item for $5, it is 4% of revenue. If you sell a $50 bundle, it is 0.4%. Bundle high-margin items into sets.

Encourage organic traffic vs paid

If your shop has good SEO (correct tags, descriptive titles, clear photos), most sales will come from Etsy search โ€” not Offsite Ads. Etsy SEO basics: 13 tags fully used, title with main keyword in first 40 characters, alt text on all photos.

Price correctly with our calculator

Use the reverse fee calculator to figure out what to charge if you want a specific net amount. For Etsy, plug in 9.5% as the rate (6.5% transaction + 3% payment) and $0.45 as fixed ($0.25 payment + $0.20 listing).

Etsy vs Shopify vs eBay โ€” fee comparison

PlatformBase fee per salePayment processingListing costBest for
Etsy6.5% transaction3% + $0.25$0.20 per itemHandmade, vintage, craft supplies
Shopify Basic0% (your own store)2.9% + $0.30$0 (but $29/mo plan)Established brands, dropshipping
eBay (managed payments)13.25% final value (avg)Built in to fee250 free listings/mo, then $0.35Used items, electronics, auctions
Amazon Handmade15% referral fee0% (Amazon Pay)$0 (Pro account $39.99/mo waived)Scale handmade, Amazon Prime audience

Etsy is generally the cheapest for handmade items under $100, especially if you can avoid Offsite Ads. Shopify wins above $200 average order value because the fixed monthly cost gets amortized across more sales.

Common questions

Can I deduct Etsy fees on my taxes?

Yes โ€” Etsy fees are a business expense in nearly every country. Etsy provides a downloadable CSV of all fees paid in a year under Shop Manager โ†’ Finances โ†’ Monthly Statements. Hand this to your accountant.

What is the Etsy Plus subscription?

$10/month for advanced shop customization, 15 free listing credits, and discounts on Etsy advertising. For most sellers it's only worth it if you list many SKUs (the 15 credits = $3 saved) and want shop branding tools.

Does Etsy charge VAT on fees?

In the EU, UK, India, Indonesia, and a few other jurisdictions, Etsy adds VAT to the fees themselves (not to your sale price). So a 6.5% transaction fee in Germany effectively becomes 6.5% + 19% VAT on that fee = ~7.7%. Reverse-charge mechanism applies if you are VAT-registered.

What if I sell digital products?

Same fees apply. No shipping component to add to the transaction fee base, so digital sales effectively cost less in absolute fees than physical.
