7 legal ways to reduce PayPal fees in 2026
1. Know which rate applies to each payment Card vs Checkout: $5.00 per $1,000
How it works
On PayPal's US fee page, PayPal Checkout, Venmo and guest checkout cost 3.49% + $0.49, standard cards 2.99% + $0.49, and advanced card payments are listed at 2.89% + $0.29. On $1,000 that is $35.39, $30.39 and $29.19. Offering the lower-rate payment type, where your checkout lets you, saves $5.00 to $6.20 per $1,000. Personal "Friends & Family" payments are not meant for business invoices.
2. Check PayPal's small-payment pricing if your average ticket is small
How it works
PayPal's fee page lists separate pricing for small payments. Whether it beats the standard rate depends on your average payment: a plan that trades a higher percentage for a lower fixed fee only helps on small tickets. Read the current numbers on PayPal's page and run both through the calculator.
3. Invoice in the currency the client pays in Avoids a $30 to $40 fee per $1,000
Why it matters
PayPal's US fee page lists a currency conversion fee of 3.00% or 4.00%. If your client pays in EUR, receive EUR and convert later through a route you have compared, or not at all. On a $1,000 payment the conversion fee alone is $30 to $40. The client may still face their own conversion, so agree on the invoice currency before you send it.
4. Compare Wise for recurring international clients
When to use
For clients who can pay by bank transfer, compare Wise's fee for your currency pair with the PayPal numbers on this page. Wise's pricing page says its fee varies by currency, and we have not verified any Wise figures, so check Wise's pricing page for your case.
5. Offer a small discount for direct bank transfer Break-even: bank route under $25.39 per $1,000
Why it works
On a $1,000 domestic invoice PayPal Checkout costs $35.39. A 1% discount ($10) for clients who pay by bank transfer or Wise leaves you ahead if that route costs you less than $25.39 (transfer fees, conversion). Show both prices upfront so the client chooses.
6. Move card payments to Stripe $6.09 less per $1,000 than Checkout
When to use
Stripe's US page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards, +1.5% for international cards and +1% when currency conversion is required. Against PayPal Checkout that is $6.09 less on $1,000 (against PayPal standard cards, $1.09), and the conversion line is 1% instead of 3.00% or 4.00%. Stripe needs an integration and may not support sellers in your country, so check before you plan around it.
7. Price a USDT route before you accept it
What to know
USDT is a separate rail, not a single percentage. The network fee, the exchange fee, the spread and your cash-out route all count, and legality, tax and exchange access depend on your country. Price the whole route with your own numbers: see PayPal vs USDT fees and how to cash out USDT.
Stacking tactics
Most of the saving usually comes from combining #3, #5 and #6:
- Invoice in the client's currency.
- Offer a lower price for a bank route, if that route costs you little.
- Move large or regular clients to a bank-style route or Stripe once you have compared the costs.
- Keep PayPal for clients who insist on it.
Example, using the verified US rates: twelve $5,000 invoices a year, all cross-border. PayPal Checkout with a 3.00% conversion fee each time costs 12 × $399.99 = $4,799.88. If PayPal does not have to convert, it costs 12 × $249.99 = $2,999.88. The difference is $1,800.00 a year (3.00% of $60,000). That counts only PayPal's conversion fee, not any conversion your client's bank applies.
