USDT 101 for freelancers: TRC20 vs ERC20 vs Solana
What is USDT?
USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. 1 USDT = $1, backed by short-term US treasuries. It's the most liquid digital dollar in crypto, with $100B+ in circulation.
For freelancers it's the perfect payment rail: no volatility, global, fast, and way cheaper than PayPal or wire.
The networks β which to use?
| Network | Fee | Speed | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRC20 (Tron) | ~$1 | 30 seconds | Default β for almost all cases |
| BEP20 (BNB Chain) | ~$0.30 | 5 seconds | Great alt if client uses Binance |
| Solana (SPL) | ~$0.01 | 1 second | Fastest & cheapest |
| Arbitrum / Optimism | ~$0.50 | 10 seconds | If client lives on L2s |
| ERC20 (Ethereum) | $5β$20 | 2β5 minutes | Only if client insists |
Step-by-step: give your client a payment address
- Open your Bybit / exchange app. Go to Deposit β USDT.
- Select the network β start with TRC20.
- Copy the address. It will start with T for TRC20.
- Send it to your client together with these exact words: "Network: TRC20 (Tron). Please confirm before sending."
- When the payment arrives, it appears in your spot wallet within 1β3 minutes.
Open a free Bybit account in 2 minutes. Free USDT deposits on all networks.
Create Bybit account βCommon mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Mixing networks. Biggest mistake. Always match TRC20βTRC20, ERC20βERC20.
- Paying ERC20 gas fees for small amounts. $10 gas on a $100 invoice = 10% fee. Worse than PayPal.
- Not testing first. Do a $5 test send before a $5,000 invoice.
- Wrong memo/tag. Exchanges sometimes require a memo. Check before confirming.
- Leaving large sums on the exchange. If you're holding long-term, move to a self-custody wallet.
FAQ
Is USDT safe? Tether publishes quarterly attestations of reserves (BDO). It's processed trillions in volume with no de-peg lasting more than hours. Still, diversify if holding large sums.
TRC20 or BEP20? Either is fine. TRC20 has more global P2P liquidity. BEP20 is cheaper if you use Binance.
Can I convert USDT to my bank account? Yes. Use P2P on Bybit / Binance / OKX. Picks a buyer β they pay your bank β you release USDT. 10β30 min.
What about USDC? USDC works identically. If your client prefers USDC, accept it β same fee structure.
